3 Questions To Ask When Choosing A Wedding Photographer

Whoohooo! You’re engaged! This is such a wonderful time and you’re excited. Once the fact that you’re getting married finally settles in a bit, you’re faced with HUGE task. Actually planning your wedding. Typically wedding planning starts out with 3 big decisions. Your wedding date, your venue and your photographer. It should also include your wedding videographer if you’re planning to have one (I highly recommend having a wedding videographer! It’s the number 1 thing couples regret not having at their wedding!). But wedding photography is one most important decisions that you’ll have to make for your wedding day, so here are my top 3 questions to ask when choosing a wedding photographer.

#1 Question To Ask When Choosing A Wedding Photographer

Does this photographer have a consistent style?

When you look through the photographer’s work, does each session or wedding look drastically different in terms of color, lighting, and overall style? Or do you see a consistent style and pattern throughout their work? Are they consistently light and airy, true to color, dark and moody, just plain dark? It’s true that every wedding is different and photographers have to deal with different lighting and colors and themes, but a good photographer has a style that their work consistently reflects and knows how to work in any lighting conditions to achieve that style and look in their work. If their previous work doesn’t look consistent, you probably won’t know what to expect from them when you get your photos back. Likewise, if their work is extremely consistent, you’ll know exactly what to expect when you get your photos back.

#2 Question To Ask When Choosing A Wedding Photographer

If their style is consistent, am I obsessed with their style of photography?

One thing you should do before choosing your photographer is ask yourself, “Am I obsessed with their work?” Do you love how they pose their couples? Do you like the way they edit? Can you see yourself in their images? All of these questions are SO important. Photographers showcase certain work on their website for a reason. Typically it’s because they love that type of work and excel at it. All in all, one style of photography isn’t better than any other style. Just like one style of wedding isn’t better than any other style of wedding. The beautiful thing about weddings is that each one is unique because YOU are unique. You deserve a photographer whose style aligns with what you envision your day to look like. Trust me, you’ll be so thankful in the long run.

#3 Question To Ask When Choosing A Wedding Photographer

Do I like this photographer’s personality? Do we feel like we could be long-lost BFF’s? Am I comfortable and relaxed around them?

This one might be the most surprising to brides, you probably don’t naturally think about being close to your wedding vendors. But the truth is, your wedding photographer (and wedding videographer) is honestly the one person you’ll spend the most time with on your wedding day. Even more than your spouse! Believe it or not. We’re right there with you from the morning until the end of the evening, every step of the way. You really don’t want someone that you’re not comfortable around in that position. You see, an amazing thing happens when you feel comfortable with the person taking your wedding photos.  When you’re comfortable, you get to relax, and you get to act like yourself. You are able to let your guard down and really let your photographer capture every detail of your love story – how you and your love act together, your silly quirks, your intimacy, your raw emotion. Trust me when I say that a comfortable couple/photographer relationship ALWAYS makes for the very best images. If you choose a photographer you don’t naturally click with or feel comfortable with, your wedding photos will reflect it.
